Italian painting of the XX century
Perhaps no map could ever display all the diversity of this ‘short century’ that went by too fast, in which dozens upon dozens of stylistic movements and experimentations came and went, overlapping and suppressing one other in such rapid succession that they only succeeded in leaving small, superficial evidence of their passing.
Eight new regions we delineated across which this journey through Italian painting of the 1900s will carry the traveller. These regions are fluid, in which the provinces frequently overlap and the capitals stretch outwards with works and artists freely living on the edges, and whose borders are the line that unites and does not divide movements and styles that intertwine and interact with each other to reveal new styles: the valley of the Dreamed Body, the theatre of the Places and Settings, the land of Enigmatic Objects, the plain of Signs, Gestures and Writings, the caves of Materials and Alchemy, the gulf of Actions and Thoughts.
